Speculation puts the US economy in a bad place. It seems like a major recession may be in store. The rest of the world seems to have a pretty stable economy at the moment, but with oil prices going totally nuts over the possibility of yet another war in the Middle East, things do not look very good.

So what do you think?
Is the US finally going to crash completely?
What are the effects going to be like in places like Canada or the far East?
Are oil prices ever going to come down to reasonable levels?
What should be done to avert an economic crisis and a depression, which people don’t seem to realize may be heading towards us as the biggest thing since the Great Depression of the 30’s?
Or am I just being paranoid and everything is going to be just fine?

Come on! Let’s discuss some economy!

If anybody’s not up to date with what happened in the last week…

A couple of US banks crashed (i.e. declared bankruptcy), which was something we were all waiting for, because of the credit and house market crisis. The US government decided to bail out AIG, and somehow this led to oil prices jumping like nuts. Stock markets have been especially wobbly lately too, because of all of this mess.

Any thoughts on how this is going to impact the world in the short or long run?

    Hi Oren,

Seems like the international scenario is really getting from bad to worse… I think things will not improve much in the next two years, because the complete impact of the sub-prime crisis is yet to fully impact the US and world economy.

Hopefully here in India , things could start improving earlier, possibly by end 2009.

I agree. The US just lowered their interest rate so much, they can’t lower it any further, which is pretty bad news. It doesn’t loo like they’ll be getting out of it any time soon… hopefully though the rest of the world won’t be impacted too badly, but it’s hard to say. Asia seems ok, but parts of Europe are also in trouble. Who knows what will end up happening?
